Introduction to Fire Pit Art
Creating the finest fire pits on the market requires a unique blend of creativity, expertise, and business acumen. The idea for Fire Pit Art® was born when Rick Wittrig purchased a fire pit from a big box store and witnessed it fall apart and cause the yard to set on fire. This prompted Wittrig to embark on a journey to craft luxury fire pits, utilizing the wealth of skills he had accumulated throughout his long career.
However, having a superb and top-notch product alone is not enough to establish a reputable business. He also aimed to design and create luxury fire pits that would not only be visually pleasing but also durable and safe to use, making Rick Wittrig widely recognized as one of the most skilled artisans in the fire pit industry.
Luxury Fire Pit Business on a Global Scale
Rick Wittrig's fire pits have gained recognition on a global scale, having been showcased at major events such as the Olympics and on the popular sports network, ESPN. His unique combination of functionality and artistry has also caught the attention of notable brands such as Marriott, Lamborghini, Burning Man, Bonnaroo, and Sig Sauer, as well as the US Park Service, resorts, and celebrities. Fire Pit Art® also appeared on Shipping Wars, HGTV, DIY Network Yard Crashers, and more.
Each of Rick's fire pits is personally labeled and numbered by the artist, making them not only beautiful but also valuable keepsakes to pass down through generations. Fire Pit Art’s products are all constructed from heavy-duty, thick mild carbon steel, producing a long-lasting and durable fire pit. The inner bowl has a high-temperature-resistant coating, and each piece is built with rain drains on the bottom and customizable options that fit every need. The outer iron oxide patina is maintenance-free, and the fire pit can be left outside in all weather conditions.A numbered brass plate on the base of the fire pit showcases a unique number, signifying it has been handmade exclusively for you. Over time, the patina will mature and darken a few shades, then remain permanent forever (for more information, read "Patina Process" below). No matter the location or occasion, Fire Pit Art® is the company you have been looking for to match your fire pit needs!
Natural Patina Steel Fire Pit
Steel is a durable and robust metal, created by blending iron with other elements. Its surface is coated with a black patina finish, which not only adds aesthetic appeal but also enhances its resistance to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. A fire pit made of patinated steel is more than just a backyard decoration; it's an investment in both style and longevity. It will not only give your outdoor space a nostalgic and charming feel, but it will also provide reliable and long-lasting performance for many years to come.
The Patina Process
Unfinished cast metals are known to be durable and long-lasting, even in harsh conditions. Cast iron, aluminum, and bronze are examples of metals that can withstand the test of time when left unfinished. As the metal is exposed to the elements, it naturally undergoes a process called patination. This occurs when a thin layer of oxides forms on the surface of the metal, which serves as a barrier to slow down further corrosion. This patina can be observed as a rust-like orange color on the surface of a Fire Pit Art® fire pit before it has been used for the first time.
Fire Pit Art® fire pits are crafted with care and built to last. Each one is constructed by hand using durable quarter-inch mild carbon steel. The steel is sandblasted down to the bare steel before they apply their special "secret sauce" to aid in the patina process. Unlike other fire pits that can have an uneven patina, their "secret sauce" ensures that the maturing and oxidizing occurs evenly. When you receive your Fire Pit Art® fire pit, it will have a dusty rust or patina coloring on the outer layer. But after the first fire, the patina will begin to mature and darken to a deep mahogany color.
Why a Steel-Based Fire Pit?
Steel is a highly adaptable metal that can be utilized for all sorts of fire pits, whether they are mobile or on wheels. Different models of steel fire pits are available, like fire bowls that are perfect for hosting intimate backyard gatherings. These steel fire pits have much greater longevity than traditional portable fire pits. Despite the fact that many in-ground fire pits are constructed from materials like stone, tile, or brick, steel-based fire pits are the most sought-after due to their superior strength and endurance.
Copper, brass, and burnished brass are metals that are easy to mold and shape, making them perfect for creating intricate or sleek fire pits. These metals can be stained or finished in a variety of ways to achieve different looks. The black patina is the most sought-after finish as it remains clean and the powder coating prevents rust from forming.
Fire pits constructed from stainless steel are becoming a trendy choice for many homeowners. They boast a sleek and contemporary look that is hard to beat. Although they may be heavier than conventional carbon steel fire pits, they are rust-proof and can endure a variety of weather conditions. Despite being called "stainless," these fire pits still require regular cleaning to keep their shine. They may be a bit more costly compared to other fire pit options, but with proper upkeep, they can last for many years to come.
What Are Steel-Based Pits Used For?
A steel fire pit makes an excellent focal point for your outdoor area, drawing attention with its mesmerizing flames. If you're looking for a way to make your backyard gatherings even more fun, consider cooking over an open flame. Many fire pits come with a cooking grate, giving you endless options for food beyond the usual hot dogs, smores, and popcorn. However, if you plan on using your fire pit for cooking, we suggest going for a wood-burning pit instead of one that uses natural gas or propane. The hotter flame of a wood-burning pit will make your cooking experience more enjoyable.
Steel fire pits that are elevated above the ground are an excellent addition to outdoor dinner parties or gatherings. Not only do they serve as a table for meals, but they can also be used as a cooking station. Additionally, if you opt for a custom-designed fire pit with a unique aesthetic, it can serve as a conversation starter and add an artistic touch to any outdoor living space.
Fire Pit Art’s Products and Craftmanship
Every fire pit designed by Fire Pit Art tells its own unique tale, crafted by the skilled hands of metal artist Rick Wittrig. Each piece is a reflection of his passion and dedication to his craft, as he pours his heart and soul into creating these stunning works of art.
“Where others might see a pile of rusty metal, I see art in the making,” he says. “I want to reach in there, and pull something out. I want to cut it, and shape it, and mold it, and make it a thing of beauty.”
Wittrig puts meticulous care into crafting each of his fire pits, carefully hand-making every aspect of them. The fire pits are constructed using robust metal, and Wittrig utilizes an internal welding technique to seamlessly connect the bowl to the base of each one. Although it is a challenging process, the end result is a fire pit with a smooth and seamless joint with no visible signs of the weld.
Fire Pit Art’s Fuel Type Options
1. Wood-Burning
You can burn any kind of wood in the Fire Pit Art® wood fire pit. If you live on a large property, you can turn a pleasant walk in the woods into a wood-gathering expedition. If you have small children, they'll love coming with you to perform this easy job that gets you back in touch with nature. Camp wood is also widely available, and relatively inexpensive. Moreover, when deciding on a fire pit, it's important to think about the size and location of the pit. Wood fire pits, which burn logs, tend to be bigger than gas fire pits, so you'll need to make sure you have enough space for them. Also, consider your location. Do you have easy access to firewood?
At Patio Pelican, we are dedicated to preserving the health of our environment and ensuring that the wood you use for your fire pit is of the highest quality. When selecting firewood, it's important to prioritize locally sourced options in order to support your community and minimize the environmental impact of transportation. Remember to always buy and burn locally for the best results.

Their burner provides a uniform & full campfire effect for your fire pit and works well with the lava rock that is included. HPC also includes a lifetime warranty with your burner for added peace of mind.
4. AWEIS System

This model is compatible with any natural gas or propane fire pit. With a max BTU output of 125,000 BTU per hour, your fire pit will be roaring no matter the weather conditions. The ignition system can be hooked up to remote controls or switches for smooth operation.
