The Patina Process

Unfinished cast metals are known to be durable and long-lasting, even in harsh conditions. Cast iron, aluminum, and bronze are examples of metals that can withstand the test of time when left unfinished. As the metal is exposed to the elements, it naturally undergoes a process called patination. This occurs when a thin layer of oxides forms on the surface of the metal, which serves as a barrier to slow down further corrosion. This patina can be observed as a rust-like orange color on the surface of a Fire Pit Art® fire pit before it has been used for the first time.

Fire Pit Art® fire pits are crafted with care and built to last. Each one is constructed by hand using durable quarter-inch mild carbon steel. The steel is sandblasted down to the bare steel before they apply their special "secret sauce" to aid in the patina process. Unlike other fire pits that can have an uneven patina, their "secret sauce" ensures that the maturing and oxidizing occurs evenly. When you receive your Fire Pit Art® fire pit, it will have a dusty rust or patina coloring on the outer layer. But after the first fire, the patina will begin to mature and darken to a deep mahogany color.
