Founded in 2014 by Peter van der Post, Indigenus was born from a simple but powerful idea: the market lacked truly high-design planters that balanced beauty, durability & authenticity. Drawing inspiration from African landscapes, materials & craft traditions, Indigenus produces some of the world’s most distinctive sculptural planters.

By moving away from fast design cycles & short-lived trends, Indigenus focuses on durability, timeless aesthetics & responsible production. Years of refinement & in-house manufacturing allow continuous quality improvement at every stage.

Glass-Reinforced Concrete (GRC) Planters

Most Indigenus planters are crafted from glass-reinforced concrete (GRC), a VOC-free material that is up to 20 times stronger than traditional concrete.

The process uses a time-proven multi-skin technique:

• A hand-finished outer face coat made from local South African aggregates, sands, oxides & cement

• A reinforced back coat with alkaline glass fibres for exceptional strength

• Carefully engineered wall thickness for lighter weight without compromising durability

Each planter is sealed with an industrial-strength UV-protective finish, making it easy to maintain while preserving natural stone character for years.

FSC-Certified Iroko Wood Planters

Indigenus wooden planters are crafted from FSC-certified Iroko, often referred to as African teak. This dense, resin-rich hardwood is naturally resistant to rot, moisture & insect attack and has been used in boat building for centuries.

Sourced responsibly from sustainable forests, Iroko brings warmth, contrast & longevity—perfectly complementing stone elements in mixed-material planter designs.

Responsible Packaging & Reduced Environmental Impact

All Indigenus planters are packed using locally produced South African packaging systems designed for strength, reusability & minimal waste.

• Paper honeycomb crates made from recycled paper

• Water-based glues & biodegradable materials

• Stackable designs to reduce shipping volume & carbon footprint

• Recyclable polyethene planter liners

Every element is considered to ensure products arrive safely while reducing environmental impact.

Handmade in South Africa by Skilled Artisans

Indigenus planters are proudly made in South Africa by highly skilled artisans & craftsmen. The factory is located within a nature conservation area in Muizenberg, Cape Town—built around a central wetland and surrounded by native fauna & flora.

This slow, hands-on process means some designs require up to 20 man-hours each, ensuring exceptional quality while supporting local employment & craftsmanship across Southern Africa.

As designer Sebastian Herkner notes, the artisans are the true heart & soul of Indigenus—bringing life, skill & intention to every planter produced.
