A Grounded Planter Inspired by Coastal Rock Formations
Stone-inspired design that anchors space with quiet architectural weight.
Steen is a quiet reflection of landscape and place. Inspired by the dramatic coastal geology of Cape Town, where sculpted boulders sit among rare flora, the planter takes its name from the Afrikaans word for stone. Low, grounded, and deliberately weighted, Steen brings the presence of natural rock formations into refined living spaces with an architectural calm that feels both elemental and intentional.
For reference, the image below shows the relative size of each Indigenus Steen Planter to help you visualize scale in your space.

Why Choose the Indigenus Steen Planter
1. Landscape-Inspired, Low Profile Form
Steen’s softly faceted silhouette echoes the shape of weathered coastal boulders. Its low, elongated proportions create a sense of permanence and grounding, making it ideal for anchoring spaces without dominating them.
2. Designed by SAOTA
Conceived by Stefan Antoni and Greg Truen of SAOTA, Steen reflects the studio’s architectural sensitivity to context, form, and material. The planter translates large-scale landscape thinking into an intimate, human-scaled object.
3. Sculpted Stone Construction
Crafted from glass-reinforced concrete, Steen captures the character of natural stone while delivering strength, durability, and refined surface detail. The material allows for complex geometry with clean edges and long-term performance.
4. Grounded Elegance with Architectural Presence
Steen’s restrained form and mineral texture create a subtle focal point that complements contemporary interiors, terraces, and architectural landscapes where balance and material honesty are essential.
5. Designed for Grouping & Spatial Rhythm
Available in multiple sizes, Steen works beautifully as a singular feature or arranged in clusters to create rhythm across open spaces. Its horizontal emphasis lends itself to pathways, courtyards, pool surrounds, and transitional zones.
6. For Residential & Professional Use
With its disciplined form and robust construction, Steen is well suited to private homes, hospitality environments, and commercial projects that require durability without visual noise.
What Are Indigenus “Self-Watering” Liners
All Indigenus planters are supplied with a planting liner. Each liner is specifically designed to suit the proportions of its corresponding planter, ensuring balanced planting and healthy root development.

The liner features an integrated water reservoir at the base, which uses capillary action, a natural wicking process, to gradually draw water upward to the plant roots over time. The reservoir can be easily refilled by pouring water directly into the liner’s fill receptacle using a watering can, while the built-in gauge clearly indicates when the reservoir has reached its optimal level.
